Is Your Jade A, B, or C?

A, B, and C are trade terms used to describe treatments applied to jadeite. They do not rank color, carving, transparency, or overall beauty. A buyer needs both pieces of information: what the material is and what, if any, treatment it received.

A, B, and C describe treatment, not beauty

Type A jadeite is generally described as natural jadeite that has not been chemically treated, apart from traditional surface waxing. Type B has been bleached with acid and impregnated with polymer. Type C has been dyed; a piece may also be described as B+C when both impregnation and dye are present. The GIA jade quality guide explains these treatment categories and the separate factors used to assess jadeite.

Confirm whether the label applies

The A/B/C shorthand is associated with jadeite treatment disclosure. It should not be casually applied to every item sold as nephrite or Hetian jade. First confirm the stated material, then ask how treatments are disclosed for that material. A listing that says only “Grade A” without naming the jade type or explaining the term leaves an important question unanswered.

Read the listing in a fixed order

  1. Find the material name: jadeite, nephrite, Hetian jade, or another stated material.
  2. Look for treatment language rather than assuming that “natural” answers every question.
  3. Check dimensions, weight, photos, polish, and construction as separate quality details.
  4. Identify whether an independent laboratory report is included and what item it covers.
  5. Review the seller’s return terms before purchase.

Do not rely on a home test

Color, temperature, sound, scratching, and phone-flashlight checks cannot reliably establish a treatment category. Polymer impregnation and dye may require trained examination and laboratory equipment. When treatment status materially affects the purchase, request a report from an appropriately qualified gemological laboratory instead of treating a social-media test as proof.

Separate treatment from workmanship

Even a clearly disclosed piece still needs a workmanship review. Inspect polish, carving edges, drill holes, symmetry, stringing, bails, and clasps. Compare multiple photographs under ordinary lighting. Browse The Jade Collection to compare forms, while relying on each individual listing for its actual material and treatment wording.

Ask focused questions before checkout

  • What jade material is stated for this exact item?
  • Has it been bleached, impregnated, dyed, coated, or otherwise treated?
  • Is a laboratory report included, and does its number match the piece?
  • Are photos of the actual item or representative stock?
  • What does the current Returns policy allow if the item differs from its listing?

Use care guidance that matches the item

GIA’s jade care guidance recommends warm soapy water as a safe cleaning approach and warns that heat can damage treated material. Avoid making a stronger care claim than the disclosed material and treatment support. Protect assembled jewelry from harsh chemicals and inspect its cord or hardware as well as the stone.

Bottom line

An A, B, or C label answers a treatment question, not whether a jade piece is attractive, well carved, or fairly priced. Confirm the material, request plain treatment disclosure, assess workmanship separately, and use laboratory evidence when treatment status is important. QZZEN’s Authenticity Promise explains the documentation and material questions buyers can bring to support.
