How to Cleanse Crystals: 7 Easy Methods

If you’ve been working with crystals for any length of time, you’ve probably heard that you need to cleanse them regularly. But what does that actually mean, and why does it matter? The idea behind cleansing crystals is that stones absorb energy from their environment — including stress, negativity, and emotional residue from the people who handle them. Over time, this accumulated energy can dull the stone’s effectiveness and even affect the energy of the space around it. Cleansing resets the stone back to its natural state, so it can do its job properly. Think of it like clearing your browser cache — it just runs better afterward. Here are seven methods that actually work, from the simplest to the more involved.

How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?

There’s no universal rule, but a good general guideline is to cleanse your crystals once a month, after any particularly intense emotional experience, or whenever they feel “heavy” or dull to you. Stones you wear daily — like a bracelet or pendant — benefit from more frequent cleansing, maybe every week or two. Crystals used in meaningful sessions or placed in high-traffic areas of your home should be cleansed more often than decorative pieces that sit undisturbed on a shelf. Trust your intuition here: if a stone feels off, cleanse it. If you’re just getting started with crystals, our natural crystal buying guide for new collectors covers the basics of building and caring for a collection.

Method 1: Moonlight

This is probably the most popular cleansing method, and for good reason — it’s completely safe for all crystals, requires zero effort, and there’s something genuinely beautiful about the ritual of it. On the night of a full moon (or the night before or after), place your crystals on a windowsill or outside where they’ll be bathed in moonlight overnight. The full moon is considered the most powerful time for cleansing and recharging, but any moonlight will do the job. You don’t need to do anything special — just set them out before you go to bed and collect them in the morning. If you want to add intention to the process, hold each stone briefly before placing it and mentally release any energy you want cleared.

Method 2: Running Water

Holding your crystals under running water — ideally natural running water like a stream, but tap water works fine — is one of the most direct cleansing methods available. The water physically washes away surface debris while energetically clearing accumulated energy. Hold each stone under the flow for about 30 to 60 seconds, visualizing the water carrying away anything that doesn’t serve the stone’s highest purpose. The important caveat here is that not all crystals are water-safe. Stones that are soft, porous, or contain iron can be damaged or dissolved by water. Avoid putting Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Lepidolite, Fluorite, or any stone ending in “-ite” that you’re unsure about into water. Quartz varieties, Amethyst, Obsidian, and Jasper are generally fine.

Method 3: Sunlight

A few hours in direct sunlight can powerfully cleanse and recharge many crystals — the sun’s energy is intense and immediate in a way that moonlight isn’t. Place your stones in a sunny spot in the morning and bring them in by midday. The main caution with sunlight is that prolonged exposure can fade the color of certain stones. Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, and Aquamarine are particularly vulnerable to UV fading — their color can shift noticeably after extended sun exposure. For these stones, limit sun cleansing to an hour or less, or stick to indirect light. Clear Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Carnelian, and most dark stones handle sunlight well.

Method 4: Selenite Charging Plate

A Selenite charging plate or slab is one of the most convenient tools for crystal maintenance, because it works passively — you just place your other crystals on it and leave them there. Selenite is one of the few crystals that doesn’t need to be cleansed itself (it self-clears), and it has the ability to cleanse and recharge other stones placed on or near it. A flat Selenite slab makes a beautiful display surface for your collection while simultaneously keeping everything energetically clear. This method is especially useful for crystals that can’t go in water or shouldn’t be left in sunlight. Leave your stones on the Selenite for a few hours or overnight for a thorough cleanse.

Method 5: Sound Cleansing

Sound is a surprisingly effective cleansing method that works for all crystals without exception — no water damage risk, no fading, no special equipment required beyond a singing bowl, tuning fork, or even a bell. The vibration from sound waves disrupts and clears stagnant energy in and around the stone. Place your crystals near a singing bowl and strike it, letting the sound wash over them for several minutes. You can also use recorded sound — Tibetan singing bowl recordings, binaural beats, or even a specific frequency like 432 Hz played through a speaker near your crystals. This method is particularly good for large collections, since you can cleanse many stones at once without handling each one individually.

Method 6: Smudging with Sage or Palo Santo

Smudging — passing your crystals through the smoke of burning sage, palo santo, or cedar — is a traditional cleansing practice used across many cultures. Light your smudge stick, let it catch and then blow out the flame so it’s smoldering, and pass each crystal through the smoke for 30 to 60 seconds. You can also waft the smoke over a group of crystals laid out on a surface. The smoke is believed to carry away negative energy and purify whatever it touches. This method works for all crystals and has the added benefit of cleansing your space at the same time. If you’re sensitive to smoke, palo santo tends to be milder and sweeter-smelling than white sage. If you’re exploring crystal ritual practices more broadly, smudging is a great ritual to incorporate into your regular routine.

Method 7: Brown Rice or Salt Bed

Burying your crystals in a bowl of dry brown rice or sea salt overnight is one of the most thorough cleansing methods available — particularly useful for stones that have been exposed to heavy or difficult energy. The rice or salt draws out and absorbs negative energy from the stone. Use a bowl large enough to fully submerge the crystal, and discard the rice or salt afterward (don’t eat it — it’s absorbed whatever you were trying to clear). This method is safe for most hard stones but should be avoided for soft, porous, or layered stones that could be scratched or damaged by the abrasive texture of salt. It’s also worth noting that salt can be corrosive to metal settings, so remove any crystal jewelry before using this method.

Which Method Is Best for Beginners?

If you’re just starting out, moonlight cleansing is the easiest and most universally safe method — it works for every crystal, requires no special tools, and carries a beautiful ritual quality that makes the practice feel meaningful. Once you’re more comfortable with your collection and know which stones you have, you can start incorporating other methods based on what each stone needs. A Selenite charging plate is a great second investment because it handles ongoing maintenance passively. For deep cleansing after intense use, smudging or a salt bed will give you the most thorough reset. The most important thing is to actually do it consistently — a cleansed crystal is a working crystal.
